Certificate of Merit

Criteria for the Patricia Gurin Certificate of Merit

1. Certificates will be awarded to persons who have completed at least 5 intergroup relations-related courses, with a grade point average of at least 3.5 in these courses.

2. These five courses must include Training (Psych310/Soc320/UC320), Practicum (Psych311/Soc321/UC321), and a second semester of Facilitation.

The second semester of Facilitation may be either dialogue facilitation, facilitation of Psych 405, or CommonGround training and at least 30 hours experience in CommonGround facilitation.

3. The two additional courses may be chosen from:

  • FIGS (first-year seminars on various topics),
  • Psych/Soc/UC122 (Intergroup Dialogues),
  • Psych 218 (formerly Psych 401) Foundations of Intergroup Relations Education),
  • Psych 401/RCidiv 350/Soc 495 (Social Justice in the Real World: IGR Capstone),v
  • Psych 405 (Social Psychology in Community Settings),
  • Soc 389 (Project Community),
  • IGR-directed Independent Studies (e.g., Psych/Soc/UC 324).
  • Students may request consideration of other courses on social diversity or social justice topics.

You may list The Patricia Gurin Certificate of Merit in Intergroup Relations on your resume or otherwise use the certificate to demonstrate that you have successfully completed, with distinction, advanced study of intergroup relations and social justice education.
